The new year is set to commence with a breathtaking celestial display as Quadrantids, the first meteor shower of the year, reaches its climax on January 3 and 4.

Meteor showers happen when the Earth traverses through debris left behind by a comet or asteroid, leading to vivid streaks of light across the sky.

This phenomenon will be observable during the early hours of the morning. The Indira Gandhi planetarium in Lucknow intends to provide telescopes for public observation of this astronomical occurrence.

“Quadrantids, also known as the Bootids, take their name from the constellation Quadrans Muralis,” stated Sumit Srivastava, a senior scientific officer at the Indira Gandhi planetarium. He further noted that the celestial event, expected to be the first and most intense meteor shower of the year, will brighten the night sky between January 3 and 4.

As per NASA, this inaugural annual meteor shower is likely to be the most spectacular one, having the capability of producing as many as 120 meteors per hour at its peak.

NASA advises observing from a location far from urban light pollution during nighttime and early mornings for the best view.

“Quadrantids are among four significant annual meteor showers, alongside the Lyrids, Leonids, and Ursids, all recognized for their unique peak timings,” remarked Srivastava.

The Quadrantid meteor shower commenced on December 27 and will peak by January 3.
