LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — The pleasant weather did not deter the Lexington Thoroughbreds Youth Ice Hockey players from participating outdoors for their yearly Winter Classic.
With skates fastened, the athletes are ready to play, and excitement fills the air. Once the game begins, the competition to be the first to score is fierce.
Local young hockey teams are capitalizing on the Triangle Park ice rink, enjoying a winter activity in the open air, despite Kentucky not being widely regarded as a hockey region.
“This isn’t a traditional hockey market here in Kentucky, so many children’s eyes widen when they are out here. They spot Rupp Arena in the backdrop, downtown adorned with Christmas lights,” remarked Will Terkin, a coach for the Lexington Thoroughbreds. “It’s an opportunity to be outdoors, and ultimately, they’re playing hockey with their peers, which is the most rewarding part.”
Over the past six years, the Winter Classic has accomplished two objectives: providing enjoyment for kids while also facilitating their learning and development on the ice.
“The highs and the lows, the challenges they encounter—hockey is a demanding sport. You must learn to skate, and that takes time,” explained Terkin. “But witnessing their growth in confidence and teamwork—those aspects are remarkable. From a parent’s viewpoint, it’s wonderful to observe the values the sport teaches them.”
Trey Adams, a participant in the Winter Classic, started his hockey journey when he attended this event last year to support a friend. Ever since that day, he has been enthralled with the sport.
“At the last Winter Classic, I really enjoyed it. I told my dad, ‘I genuinely want to play hockey.’ And he replied, ‘Sure, bud,” said Trey.
Trey’s father, Travis Adams, promptly enrolled him in local hockey programs.
“We registered him right after that. He went to the Lexington Ice Center to learn skating skills, shooting, and to get comfortable. He began playing in a recreational league. Now, he’s here playing,” said Travis.
Now, Trey skates as if he has been playing for years, aiming to score and having a great time with his friends. Both Trey and his father aspire to showcase hockey’s potential to the Bluegrass community.
“I get thrilled about it. It’s incredibly exciting. I want to motivate others to participate. I feel a surge of excitement when he’s on the ice playing,” expressed Travis.
