Vacationer Sparks Viral Buzz with Hilariously Honest Reply: ‘No, I’m Not Having Fun!’

Certain individuals may want to think about adopting a more … tactful approach.

That’s the general consensus of users on a viral Reddit discussion after a man recounted his experience of going on a nature hike with his sibling while on vacation in Arizona — subsequently sharing his forthright response to a question posed by his brother once their hike concluded.

“I am the kind of person who, when I don’t enjoy something, I’ll simply tell you I don’t,” Reddit user “Ness_Lucas” remarked at the beginning of his post on the social media platform a few days back.

As of Sunday, the post had gathered more than 6,000 reactions.

He continued, “However, if I commit to something, I’ll follow it through to the finish without grumbling.”

He mentioned that the matter “came to a peak” when he was “on vacation with my elder brother in Arizona, who wished to partake in numerous nature hikes.”

He expressed on Reddit, “Nature hikes are acceptable. I don’t dislike them, but I really do not appreciate ascending steep hills.”

“Climbing uphill … is extremely exhausting and leaves me drenched.”

He stated, “Descending is the simplest task imaginable. It’s like being nature’s passenger princess. You just extend your foot forward and let gravity do all the exertion.”

He added, “Conversely, climbing uphill is quite taxing and leaves me perspiring.”

He went on to say, “I don’t make it a habit to complain while engaging in an activity, so while I was ascending, despite not enjoying it a great deal, I maintained [a] simple conversation with my brother.”

However, as soon as the duo began to return down, the man recounted that his brother “inquired whether I was enjoying myself — and I replied no.”

He clarified, “Not due to any fault of my brother. I just did not find the activity enjoyable. Not even unpleasant, just adequate.”

“I don’t appreciate it when people seek my viewpoint and become upset when I provide my truthful feedback.”

Later, while driving the Reddit poster to the airport for his return flight, he mentioned that his brother remarked, “If I ask you if you’re enjoying yourself, don’t respond ‘no.'”

The Reddit user stated, “I recognize that it can be disheartening to know someone isn’t having fun.”

Nevertheless, “I dislike it when people inquire about my opinion and get upset when I provide my candid feedback,” he expressed.

Respondents on the Reddit page termed “Am I the a–hole” greatly engaged with the post — generally concluding that the man was indeed the “a–hole” for his response to his kin. 

“Individuals yearn to hear that you’re relishing their company.”

A commenter in the top-rated reply wrote, earning approximately 21,000 reactions, “‘It’s been a delightful day spending time with you, but, goodness, this hike is steep’ [or] ‘I’m anticipating the downhill part!’ That’s the type of courteous response people seek.”

The same individual elaborated, “You acknowledge you’re appreciating your brother’s companionship, which was what he desired to hear, yet you can also recognize the hike is tough/challenging, etc. Regardless of how unpleasant the activity is — individuals want to hear that you’re enjoying their company.”

Another individual conveyed, responding to the first commenter, “Precisely! It’s a minor social nicety that signifies ‘I’m pleased to spend time with you, even if I don’t find the activity enjoyable.’

Yet another commenter sharply noted, “You are perched on your self-appointed pedestal and expecting everyone to treat you like a little princess. Your brother likely regrets ever embarking on a hike with you. Sometimes in life, you need to climb uphill to achieve your goals.”

A different commenter excused the Reddit user but offered this advice: “Not everyone enjoys hiking. That’s a personal decision. But a more suitable option would be to converse with your brother and find a compromise on doing something that you will BOTH appreciate.”
