New safety cameras have been introduced.

Today (Monday, 30th December), David Michael, the Minister for Road Safety, revealed that innovative new safety cameras capable of identifying mobile phone and seatbelt violations will soon be deployed on Western Australian roads.

The Minister addressed the media from a facility in Perth where the cameras are being put together.

Over the coming six months, six mobile safety camera trailers will be rolled out across the state, alongside enhancements to fixed cameras at two locations on the Kwinana Freeway.

These fresh safety cameras will be the most sophisticated in the nation and possess the ability to identify multiple infractions at once, including speeding, illegal mobile phone usage, and seatbelt violations.

During the rollout of this new safety camera technology, a cautionary period will be in effect.

Starting on 26 January 2025, drivers caught committing a mobile phone or seatbelt offence by the new safety cameras will receive a caution notice.

This caution notice will educate the recipients about the capabilities of the new technology and offer them a chance to amend their reckless driving habits before the enforcement of camera penalties begins.

The new safety cameras will augment the already existing fleet of automated speed cameras managed by the WA Police Force.

The funding for the safety camera initiative comes from the Road Trauma Trust Account, which allocates 100 percent of safety camera infringement revenues towards projects and programs aimed at diminishing injuries and fatalities on WA roads.
