CHICAGO – A sluggish beginning hurt DePaul on Sunday afternoon as they suffered a 78-59 defeat against long-standing adversary Marquette at Wintrust Arena. The Blue Demons managed a mere 13-percent shooting from the floor in the opening quarter and couldn’t recover, dropping to 6-9 for the season and 1-1 in BIG EAST competition.

Jorie Allen once again led the scoring for the Blue Demons with 24 points, all scored in the second half, on 55-percent shooting from the field. Allen marked her 15th consecutive game in double figures and reached at least 20 points for the eighth time this season.

Taylor Johnson-Matthews recorded her first career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, in addition to a career-high six assists. The junior guard has now scored in double digits for the seventh game in a row.

Junior Meg Newman completed the trio scoring in double figures with 10 points, alongside her eight rebounds and two steals, achieving her first multi-steal game as a Blue Demon.

DePaul’s bench contributed just six points, while Allen, Johnson-Matthews, and Newman combined for 53.

Four Golden Eagles scored in double figures, with Skylar Forbes leading the way with 18 points.

How It Occurred
Marquette (9-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) commenced the game by sinking five of their first six field goal attempts, taking an early 10-2 lead. Johnson-Matthews responded for DePaul, contributing six points in the first quarter. The Blue Demon defense restricted the Golden Eagles to 3-for-12 shooting, closing the quarter trailing 18-8.

Newman ignited the Blue Demon offense at the start of the second quarter, scoring six points with a flawless 3-for-3 from the field. Four offensive rebounds by DePaul kept the Marquette lead at 30-20. A 13-5 run from the Golden Eagles concluded the first half, with the visitors leading 43-27.

The Blue Demons made six consecutive baskets at the start of the third quarter, led by Allen’s nine points during that stretch. The graduate forward accounted for 13 of DePaul’s 17 points in the third quarter as Marquette stretched its lead to 20 by the quarter’s end, 64-44.

Seven uninterrupted points by Allen closed the gap to 15, 70-55, just beyond the midway point in the fourth quarter. Another run by DePaul resulted in the Scarlet and Blue hitting five of their last six shots from the field before ultimately losing 78-59.
