Thomas Shines in Overtime to Claim WCC Player of the Week Title!

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – By scoring 34 points during the thrilling overtime victory against Santa Clara, Malik Thomas from San Francisco earned the title of Credit Union 1 West Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the third occasion this season. Austin Rapp of Portland secured the accolade of Credit Union 1 WCC Freshman of the Week for a second time this season.

Contributing to the Dons’ 2-0 start in conference play, Malik Thomas recorded 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and a single steal in San Francisco’s 70-55 triumph over LMU. On Monday evening, he came just one point away from his career-best in USF’s 97-94 overtime victory against Santa Clara. He achieved a total of 34 points, a seasonal best of eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals in the successful game against the Broncos. In total, he maintained a shooting percentage of 16-of-17 from the charity stripe across both matches while also shooting 39.5 percent (15-for-38) from the floor and 43.8 percent (7-for-16) from beyond the arc. USF now boasts four Conference weekly honors for this season.

CREDIT UNION 1 WCC MEN’S BASKETBALL FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK – AUSTIN RAPP, FR., F – PORTLAND

Austin Rapp achieved an average of 19.5 points and six rebounds in Portland’s initial league matches against Washington State and Oregon State. He amassed 17 points along with six rebounds, four assists, three blocked shots, and a steal in 34 minutes during Portland’s WCC opener versus the Cougars last Saturday. Rapp converted all 10 of his free throw attempts throughout the game. Later, he reached a seasonal high of 22 points against the Beavers on Monday, during which he shot 7-for-12 from the field and 5-for-10 from the three-point line. The Melbourne, Australia native is currently the leading scorer and rebounder among all WCC freshmen this season, additionally leading the entire WCC in three-point shooting percentage (.411), total three-pointers (39), and free throw percentage (.918). Rapp holds both of Portland’s Conference weekly awards this season.
