I made a promise to myself last year that I would finally tackle some of my backlog. After getting hooked on Final Fantasy XIV and a variety of other games, that commitment was not fulfilled. My New Year’s Resolution this year, though? I will finally make my way through some of those titles that have been accumulating on my shelf before I purchase anything new. But hold on, The Coin Game is finally on sale on Steam… Oh no, I’ve already faltered.

I Must Cease Being Terminally Online To Progress Through Some of My Other Backlog Titles

Even though I’ve already grabbed 3 new games since the new year commenced, I’m determined to ensure I carve out time to work through my backlog. While 2024 introduced numerous outstanding games, a considerable amount of my time was devoted to gathering a plethora of earlier titles. Titles such as Metroid Prime and Shadow the Hedgehog occupy space on my shelf, merely awaiting their turn. However, like many others, I am continually lured by the temptation to purchase an excessive number of games on Steam that I have no intention of playing.

Thus, I’m committing this year to a promise in writing. I am finally going to begin working my way through some of these older games. Chances are I’ll also be penning articles about them as I eventually get the opportunity to engage with them. The first title on that roster? Shadow the Hedgehog, as previously indicated. I genuinely need to delve into this one, and I am genuinely eager to encounter the cringe experience that I anticipate awaits me. Even on contemporary consoles, I have numerous games I’ve purchased but have yet to play.

We talk a great deal about video games, and even fantasize about titles we’d love to see resurrected from classic consoles. Yet the most amusing part is, I possess the means to play half of these games already. I simply need to follow through and do it. That’s why I’m hoping you can help me stay accountable. By placing this article into the world, I am committing myself to this vow. I will finally start engaging with some of the other games I possess before I acquire new ones, or at the very least, only purchasing games that I know I’ll experience within a reasonable timeframe.

My Renewed Fascination with Multiplayer Gaming May Pose a Dilemma, However

So, recall how just a few moments ago, I expressed my desire to dive deeper into the games I already possess? Here’s the dilemma; my friends and I have fixated on a few particular games as of late. My already scarce gaming time is being further consumed by these titles. Lockdown Protocol currently has a firm grip on us, and prior to this, it was Escape from Tarkov.

I didn’t have many opportunities to play games with friends when I was younger. Thus, declaring my lack of interest gives me a complex that makes me worry my friends will leave me out of future gaming sessions if I don’t join in right away. I recognize that this isn’t the reality, yet something in my mind goes brrrrr and makes it nearly impossible for me to decline the chance. Is that, in essence, another justification for me to overlook the overwhelming backlog I’m currently facing?

So, I suppose 2025 will be the year of learning to say “I can’t right now,” alongside addressing my backlog. I guess that’s where this meandering discourse is ultimately heading. 2025 is positioned to be a fresh beginning for many different endeavors. It’s time to finally clear out some of those classic games I’ve been needing to play. Devoting a bit more time to myself, both within the gaming realm and beyond. And achieving a suitable balance between time spent with friends and personal time.

Moreover, I just really crave an excuse to finally immerse myself in Shadow the Hedgehog. I genuinely believe I will enjoy it, but perhaps my instincts are advising me “NO” for a reason.
