Grandview Heights swimmer Carrie Furbee pursues her third consecutive state title
Ohio State signee Carrie Furbee from Grandview Heights has clinched the Division II state titles for both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle in the last two years.
Given Carrie Furbee’s accomplishments in swimming over the last three years, it could be unexpected to learn that the Grandview Heights senior began her high school journey in search of her identity in the water.
“I wasn’t among the leading swimmers at all,” Furbee expressed. “I never ranked at the top of my groups. I did face some challenges in middle school, trying to determine what my events would be and what my aspirations were.”
All uncertainties were resolved in the following months when Furbee achieved the first of what has now become three successive sweeps of the Division II district championships in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle.
Moreover, she has earned four OHSAA titles in those events, solidifying Furbee’s position among the state’s elite athletes.
The Ohio State signee has dominated both the 50 and 100 freestyle at state for the past two years, and her current times of 23.18 and 50.93 in those events would easily rank her at the top statewide based on listings from SwimMeet.com.
Furbee achieved those impressive times during the Speedo Winter Junior Championships held in Greensboro, North Carolina, in mid-December. After winning state with times of 23.02 and 50.06 last year, she is nearing those marks even without significant tapering.
“I concentrate on achieving the times I aim for,” Furbee stated. “I stood on the podium (at state) for one event during my freshman year (placing seventh in the 50 free). It was the summer prior to my freshman year that I recognized I could elevate my swimming to a higher standard. I was starting to find my footing in swimming. I discovered my passion for sprint events and noticed remarkable progress.”
As a freshman, Furbee also led off the 200 and 400 free relays at the state competition and has anchored three state-qualifying 200 free and 200 medley relays in the last two years.
She holds records at Grandview for the 50 free, 100 butterfly, 100 free, 200 free, and 500 free, in addition to aiding in setting the program records for the 200 free and 400 free relays.
“It’s been extraordinary,” remarked Grandview coach Susan Ferguson, who has been mentoring Furbee since her youth swimming days. “She has consistently demonstrated focus, but her stroke has greatly improved (during her freshman year) and her times have significantly dropped. You could see her growing in confidence and becoming more established.”
Furbee, who pledged to OSU in October 2023 and opted for the Buckeyes over propositions from Indiana and Michigan, has a lineage rich in swimming talent. Her mother, Chris, competed at Wittenberg, and her older brother Calvin, a 2018 alumnus of Grandview who continued his swimming career at Division III Emory University, still holds five records for Bobcats boys.
Millie Evans, a senior at Bexley and a teammate at Central Ohio Aquatics club, who has signed with Penn State and finished as last year’s Division II state runner-up in the 100 fly, mentioned that Furbee’s ability to lead overshadows her other traits.
“She’s the leader of the lane during our practice sessions, and I’m next to her (in the adjacent lane),” Evans shared. “She ensures her lane stays on track and works diligently, which is commendable. Being around her is certainly enjoyable. She’s consistently present. She always invests the effort.”
Although Furbee and Evans have infrequently competed against each other in individual events, that may change in the future.
Furbee mentioned that the 100 fly, a race that Evans has clinched at the district level for the past two years, “has certainly become one of my primary events,” yet she refrained from confirming her participation in the postseason. The decision is anticipated to be made soon by her and Ferguson.
Furbee achieved a tie for 10th place in the 100 fly at Junior Nationals.
“Regardless of her plans for the season or toward the conclusion of her high school journey, she will exert every effort to achieve that objective,” Ferguson stated. “She embraces challenges and is unafraid. Even since her freshman year and prior, she (has demonstrated) fearlessness.”
