“Revamp Your Tech This New Year: Fayette County’s Exciting Electronics Recycling Program!”

With the holiday season concluded, numerous individuals might be eager to dispose of electronics made redundant by a new, received device.

Sheila Shea, the recycling supervisor for the Fayette County Recycling Convenience Center, stated that they experience an increase in recycled materials during this period. The recycling center functions as a drive-thru facility situated at 105 Romeo Lane, Uniontown.

“During the Christmas season, we consistently receive a significant number of TVs. People appear to acquire new TVs and new electronics. We also gather much more cardboard,” Shea noted.

However, those searching for a means to discard one of the most cheerful aspects of the holiday period will be disappointed.

“We don’t accept your Christmas lights,” Shea explained.

The recycling center does not impose fees for most electronic devices, including televisions, computers, and printers. Shea mentioned they simply request a monetary contribution.

Domestic appliances such as air conditioning units, washers, and dryers incur a $2 fee per item.

Apart from Christmas lights, there are numerous other materials that the recycling center cannot handle: resin plastics, tempered glass, ceramics, porcelain, auto glass, vinyl, and textiles.

Shea also encourages patrons to donate items still in good, functioning condition.

“Items that can be reused … don’t merely toss it in your trash,” Shea remarked.

The recycling center has restricted operating hours. They are open on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Although there are several drop-off bins for recyclables spread across Fayette County, these do not accept electronic devices. The county’s website on recycling and stormwater features a list of drop-off sites, accepted materials, and hours of operation.

“Speak with your township supervisors or your township office. If I don’t answer, please leave a message,” Shea advised, adding that she is best contacted via her county email if anyone has inquiries regarding recycling.

Residents of Washington County also have a local option for recycling electronics. The county collaborates with JVS Environmental, which accepts televisions, computer monitors and peripherals, speakers, and printers. While most items can be recycled at no cost, CRT televisions have a $50 disposal charge.

JVS Environmental operates the recycling service on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The facility is located at 1 American Way, Ellsworth, situated behind the local post office.
