Unprecedented number of participants arrive on Thanksgiving morning for the 13th annual 5K run/walk event
Numerous individuals gathered in typical running outfits such as shorts, tank tops, T-shirts, and perhaps a few headbands, but many opted for more festive attire for the occasion held on Thanksgiving morning for the second consecutive year.
Within the record-breaking group of around 225 participants, some displayed their creativity through their running outfits, transforming the occasion into a genuine fun run.
One particular group caught attention as they appeared to be starting their Christmas festivities early. Sara Mountin, residing in Vandenberg Village near Lompoc, along with several family members, many visiting from Utah, sported red and black tracksuits featuring a representation of Santa Claus on the back.
“Having a large family gathering here inspired us to do something unique and enjoy the costumes,” Mountin mentioned. “We discovered these at Walmart and ordered a bunch.
“It’s a fantastic way to spend the day and get some exercise before the big feast.”
This was the concept behind Solvang Parks and Rec’s decision last year to host the event on Thanksgiving morning from then on.
“The turnout has been remarkable; this is the largest participation we have ever seen,” stated Solvang Park’s and Rec Director Jenny McClurg. “This isn’t a competitive race at all — we aren’t tracking times or declaring a winner; participants can complete the full 5K distance or just part of it. We just want everyone to gather and enjoy themselves.”
Longtime Parks and Rec staff member Fred Lageman enhanced the atmosphere as the emcee, initiating the countdown to the run, and then encouraging participants with music as he served as the DJ throughout the event. Meanwhile, Recreation Clerk Elisa Monroy and the department’s newest member, Recreation Coordinator Jalen Gragston, actively distributed water to those desiring it and handed out medals to both kids and adults who finished a lap.
As McClurg mentioned, there were no official winners announced, although Santa Maria resident Richie Ortiz did manage to complete the 5 kilometers before anyone else.
“It’s wonderful to come out here and take part in this,” Ortiz commented. “In addition to this event and the half-marathon earlier this year, Solvang hosts some fantastic activities.”
Ivan Becerra, who coaches aspiring runners with IB1 Training located at Sunny Field Park, was also present at the event.
“I came to support some of my students who are participating,” he mentioned. “We knew this was happening on Thanksgiving, and we’ve encouraged many from our program to take part.”
Staying true to the casual vibe of the run, numerous participants completed the 5K alongside their dogs, while others navigated with their very young children in strollers, and many runners showcased matching outfits as part of a larger group.
Oscar Diaz from Santa Ynez attended the Turkey Trot with his family, identifiable by their bright orange T-shirts. Oscar’s shirt displayed a list that likely outlined his laid-back agenda for the day: “Run. Turkey. Beer. Nap.”
“I had an amazing time participating,” Diaz expressed while unwinding post-race with his daughter Andrea, who competes in the high jump on the Santa Ynez High track and field team. “This is just an awesome activity that fosters team spirit. Now we can return home and enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving feast.”
Another group enjoying the morning together was the Trot Squad, some members of which donned special T-shirts made for the occasion. Included in the group was Derek Ferguson, who, with his wife Samantha, relocated to Orcutt from Washington, D.C.
“We’ve participated in some running events before and wanted to get started out here,” he shared. “We’ve met some new friends and chose to do this. It’s been a lot of fun.”
With the run concluded, Ferguson looked forward to the evening meal but had something else on his mind first.
“We’re heading over to [downtown] Solvang to find a spot where I can enjoy a beer,” he indicated.
