A recent study labels New York as one of the premier cities in the nation for an active lifestyle — while a location just across the Hudson River ranks among the least favorable.

The analysis by WalletHub places the vibrant Big Apple in second position nationwide, following beautiful Honolulu — evaluating factors such as walkability and availability of fitness facilities, sports fields, and hiking paths.

“You can engage in significant physical activity merely by walking to your workplace, eateries, and other venues,” the report notes regarding New York’s impressive score. The city also features the second-highest number of playgrounds per capita in the nation, according to the findings.

“It’s among the finest cities concerning the accessibility of dance academies, swimming classes, bicycle rental services, basketball courts, soccer fields, and ice rinks,” the creators of the study expressed.

Moreover, New Yorkers themselves “show a significant level of enthusiasm for remaining active.” This was demonstrated through city residents searching for terms online related to workouts and exercise gear at higher rates than any other city.

“This implies that if you’re keen on staying active, you will likely discover many like-minded individuals who you can potentially exercise with.”

The same cannot be claimed regarding the nearby lower-tier city of Newark, NJ, which secured the 93rd spot out of 100, merely a PATH ride away. Jersey City, the only other listed region in NJ, did not perform well either at 84.

Newark suffered primarily due to a lack of access to sports and recreational activities. The situation was similar for Jersey City — even though the riverside city was recently designated as one of the nation’s priciest places to reside.

Additionally, within the vicinity, Philadelphia ranked 9th among American cities for similar reasons as New York. Buffalo, the sole other entry from the Empire State, landed in a mediocre 45th place.

Another chilly region, Minneapolis, also made the top 20 at 17. Its twin city, Saint Paul, was ranked 25th — one position ahead of No. 26 — San Jose.

North Las Vegas performed the worst overall at 100 — once again highlighting a stark divide within a single metropolitan area. The actual Sin City, immediately adjacent, scored a more favorable number at four on the list.
