New program to encourage open development and advance projects within the Chromium community
SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The Linux Foundation, a non-profit entity fostering widespread innovation via open source, announced today the establishment of Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers. This program aims to finance open development and improve projects within the Chromium community, ensuring extensive backing and durability for open source contributions that will promote technological progress.
“The initiation of the Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers marks another advancement in empowering the open source community,” remarked Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation. “This initiative will offer crucial funding and development assistance for the progressive open development of projects within the Chromium ecosystem.”
The Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers will establish a neutral environment where industry executives, scholars, programmers, and the extensive open source community can collaborate to enhance projects within the Chromium ecosystem. By encouraging partnership, the initiative aims to eliminate obstacles to innovation, widen adoption, and ensure that projects within the Chromium ecosystem obtain the necessary resources for success. The Chromium projects themselves will maintain their current governance structures, while only the new Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers will operate under the banner of the Linux Foundation.
A number of prominent organizations have already committed their support to the initiative, including Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Opera. These entities are dedicated to fostering innovation in the Chromium community through their participation in this program.
- “With the exceptional support of the Linux Foundation, we view the Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers as a vital opportunity to establish a sustainable platform to assist industry leaders, academia, developers, and the larger open source community in the ongoing progress and innovation of the Chromium ecosystem,” stated Parisa Tabriz, VP, Chrome.
- “Microsoft is delighted to participate in this initiative which will promote collaboration within the Chromium community. This effort aligns with our dedication to the web platform through significant and constructive contributions, engagement in collaborative engineering, and partnerships with the community to achieve optimal outcomes for all web users,” commented Meghan Perez, VP, Microsoft Edge.
- “As a significant browser contributing to the Chromium initiative, Opera is pleased to support the Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers and dedicate our efforts towards the advancement of the open-source ecosystem. We anticipate collaborating with project members to facilitate this growth and continue developing innovative and attractive products for all users,” remarked Krystian Kolondra, EVP Browsers, Opera.
The Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers adhere to an open governance framework, adopting best practices established by other successful Linux Foundation initiatives. It emphasizes transparency, inclusivity, and community-led development. A technical advisory committee (TAC) will be formed to steer the initiative’s development, ensuring it addresses the needs of the broader Chromium community.
