LARAMIE, Wyo. (1/9/25) – The swimming and diving squads from the University of Wyoming are prepared to host Denver for Senior Day this Saturday at Laramie High School. Diving is scheduled to commence at 10:30 a.m. with swimming activities starting at 12 p.m.
As this marks the last home event of the season, Wyoming will honor twelve Cowgirl and six Cowboy seniors at 11:50 a.m. right before the swimming events begin at noon. Madelynn Appelhans, Heidi Billings, Emily Burchett, Brynlee Busskohl, Kayla Cunningham, Kali Franckowiak, Hannah Giles, Gabriella Haigler, Rachael Horne, Maisyn Klimczak, Sydney Metzler and Lauren Swartz will be honored for the Cowgirls. On the Cowboys side, Jakob Borrman, Kellen Chadderdon, Matt Lang, Jack O’Neil, Gavin Smith and Quinn Teller will also be acknowledged.
When queried about the significance of this senior class to the program, the thoughtful reflections from head coach Dave Denniston clearly indicate their exceptional value to Wyoming.
“Every single one of them has contributed greatly to this team, culture, and our daily lives over the last four or five years,” Denniston expressed. “That’s a substantial aspect that will be quite challenging to replace. Each year varies greatly, from one team to the next. But even when my wife, Jen, notices ‘this is a really unique team, Dave,’ she’s one hundred percent right, and it’s due to all these seniors.”
This senior class has achieved significant success during their tenure at Wyoming, while also navigating considerable challenges and guiding their program through it.
Denniston stated, “They helped all of us through the hardships of last year, but in their own way, they also made every day enjoyable. It’s remarkable that they can balance facing struggles, overcoming challenges, and working hard while still smiling, laughing, and dancing along the way, making the coaches and others smile, laugh, and dance too. That’s what has set them apart as a team and a program. When you consider their accomplishments, they’re highly noteworthy. But what truly distinguishes them for me is who they are as individuals. There’s a lot of passion on this team, including our fifth years who remained. This is an exceptionally unique team, and while I can’t sing the praises of everyone in one soundbite, they’ve all contributed meaningfully to enhance our team and program.”
The dual meet against Denver will mark the Pokes’ first competition of the 2025 year, following their participation in the UNLV Invite back in mid-December. The Cowgirls finished third with 639 points, while the Cowboys secured sixth place with 409 points.
Wyoming last competed against Denver in a Tri-meet last January featuring BYU. The Cowgirls triumphed over BYU but ultimately fell short against the Pioneers with a score of 149.5-184.5. The Cowboys were defeated by both BYU and Denver, with the score against the latter being 118-216.
With Senior Day approaching, the Pokes will undoubtedly be motivated to shift the outcome against Denver this time. The Cowgirls currently boast a 4-0 overall record and stand at 3-0 in the Mountain West, with high hopes to maintain their strong performance with a win against Denver. The Cowboys have a 1-1 overall record and are 1-0 in the WAC. A victory over the Pioneers would undoubtedly boost their confidence and momentum with the WAC Championships on the horizon.
“I believe our women’s team this year is poised to perform admirably and to defeat Denver. Our men’s team continues to surprise me every time we compete, so I won’t underestimate them,” Denniston remarked. “I’m confident we’ll race fiercely; we’ll give everything we have in the pool. I know they possess more depth than us, especially in diving and some distance events, but we’ll still give it our all, and our men are going to make it a closely contested meet.”
After this weekend, the Pokes return to the pool next Saturday, January 18, against Colorado School of Mines in Golden at 1 p.m.
