Approval has been granted for a £26m health and leisure facility.

The Castle Sports Complex in Spalding will be replaced with an innovative hub comprising two new swimming pools, a fitness center, outdoor sports amenities, and wellness areas.

South Holland District Council received £20m from the government’s Levelling Up Fund for the undertaking.

Completion of the project is anticipated by autumn 2026.

The initial phase of construction is expected to kick off in the spring, featuring the establishment of a singular building housing two swimming pools, changing areas, a gymnasium, and a sports hall.

The new facility will encompass cycling and group exercise studios, consultation rooms for health and well-being, a dedicated play area for children, and a revamped reception area.

Once the new sports center is operational, the second phase will concentrate on the demolition of the current swimming pool, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The third phase will entail the construction of outdoor sports areas, including a 3G pitch, a park run circuit, and a bowls hall.

The first phase of the initiative is set to commence in the spring

Throughout the construction phase, the current swimming pool will continue to operate, although users of the exercise suite will have access to the gym at the Spalding campus of Boston College as an alternative.

The council aims to boost health and well-being in the region following a Sport England analysis in 2021, which revealed that South Holland had the fourth-lowest exercise and activity rates in the nation.

Councillor Gary Taylor expressed: “I eagerly anticipate the commencement of work and for these promising plans to become reality, countering the national trend in leisure services.

“I am optimistic that the end result will be a wonderful venue for socializing, exercising, and playing, providing essential health and well-being support for many years ahead.”
