Funding will facilitate a public art upkeep initiative.
SAN ANTONIO (January 14, 2025) – The Department of Arts & Culture of the City of San Antonio is excited to reveal that it has received approval from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for a Grants for Arts Projects award amounting to $30,000 for public art maintenance. This matching grant will contribute to the upkeep of “World Walk”, an artwork from 2017 that features colorful tabs on a chain-link fence and concrete designs on a pedestrian bridge spanning Poteet Jourdanton Freeway in Council District 4. This grant is part of 1,400 Grants for Arts Projects being awarded nationally by the NEA, collectively exceeding $35 million in the recent fiscal year 2025 grant announcement.
“The NEA is proud to sustain nearly 60 years of backing the endeavors of organizations and artists that contribute to cultivating our nation’s vibrant arts landscape and diverse communities,” stated NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD. “It is uplifting to witness the variety of innovative projects occurring, including this public art restoration initiative in San Antonio.”
“World Walk” converts the pedestrian bridge into an engaging atlas where visitors can circumnavigate the globe along the latitudinal axis of San Antonio. Upkeep efforts are slated to commence later this year and continue through the fiscal year 2026.
“Public artworks are susceptible to deterioration over time due to environmental exposure,” expressed Department of Arts & Culture Director Krystal Jones. “Our department is dedicated to safeguarding and conserving San Antonio’s public art collection for the enjoyment of future generations. In fiscal year 2024, we performed maintenance on over 33 public artworks. With this assistance from the NEA, we will guarantee that ‘World Walk’ continues to inspire and connect all who encounter the artwork.”
