WORCESTER — Following a week of training in Puerto Rico, the WPI men’s swimming and diving squad returned to competitive action on Tuesday afternoon, facing off in a double-duel against Division II schools Adelphi and Bentley. WPI approached the meet with a 4-5 record, achieving a split result by defeating Bentley 162-132 while coming up short against Adelphi 122-176.

The Engineers demonstrated impressive performances both in the pool and on the diving platforms. The pair of senior Val Corrente (East Setauket, NY) and freshman Tom Fitzgerald (East Longmeadow, MA) finished 2-3 on both boards. The senior outperformed his fellow diver, scoring 236.78 on the 1m, compared to Fitzgerald’s 212.10. A similar outcome occurred on the 3m, with Corrente scoring 249.75 points against Fitzgerald’s 233.70.

Junior Chris Smith (Northbridge, MA) secured victories in two out of his three individual events. After finishing second in the 200 medley relay, where he teamed up with freshman Tyson Elliott (Portland, OR), and sophomores Dean Doubek (Arnold, MD) and Nolan Schlessman (Sudbury, MA), Smith jumped into the 100 backstroke, where he claimed his second runner-up finish, touching the wall at 53.05.

Smith reversed his fortunes in the 200, outpacing Adelphi’s Ryan Kakimseit with a time of 1:55.32 to 1:58.62, flipping the outcome of the 100 back. In his final individual effort of the meet, Smith triumphed in the 200 IM, winning in 1:57.75, becoming the sole swimmer to achieve a time under two minutes.

Smith’s relay teammates also exhibited strong performances. Schlessman and fellow sophomore Sean Tesoro (Reading, MA) finished 2-5 in the 200 free, with Schlessman marking 1:45.53. In the 100, Tesoro surpassed his fellow sophomores as his 47.54 was sufficient for a second-place finish. Schlessman and Doubek followed closely, as their times of 47.76 and 48.64 earned them third and sixth place, respectively.

Doubek demonstrated a solid performance in the 50 free as well, achieving second place with a time of 21.67, one position ahead of Tesoro (21.77) and three places in front of grad student Jack Brazer (Peterborough, NH), who finished in 22.24.

The men’s achievements weren’t confined to just the sprint frees and backstrokes. Seniors Fraser Milligan (Middlebury, VT) and Aidan Greenfield (Northport, NY) garnered a pair of top three finishes. Milligan established a new personal best of 10:20.53 in the 1000, finishing in third place, while Greenfield narrowly missed out on victory in the 500 free, securing second place with a time of 4:51.90, just .06 seconds behind first.

The Engineers will be back in action this Saturday, competing against Colby in Waterville, Maine.
