An annual ceremony to honor Holocaust Memorial Day is scheduled to be held at the bandstand in Queen’s Park, Loughborough.
On Monday, 27 January at 12pm, the Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Dr Julie Bradshaw MBE, will deliver a statement of commitment.
Members of the community are welcomed to partake in the service and place a pebble on the memorial stone as a tribute to those who lost their lives during the Holocaust.
This day is acknowledged globally to commemorate the six million Jews who were slain during the Holocaust, in addition to millions of others perished from 1933 to 1945 due to Nazi persecution and in genocides worldwide that followed.
The Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Dr Julie Bradshaw MBE remarked: “Commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day and honoring those who perished in genocides across the globe is of utmost importance.
“This serves not only as a moment to reflect on events of the past, but also as an opportunity for us to unite and oppose all forms of hatred, bias, and discrimination – irrespective of race, ethnicity, gender or sexual identity.
“Numerous residents have profound, personal connections to Holocaust Memorial Day, and it is crucial we extend our complete support to them.”
The commitment statement to be articulated by the Mayor emphasizes the importance of remembering past holocausts, honoring the deceased, and ensuring education for forthcoming generations.
The focus for this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is ‘For a Better Future,’ motivating individuals to contemplate how we can both learn from and gain insight into the Holocaust and more recent genocides, fostering a brighter future.
This year also marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and the 30th anniversary of the Bosnian genocide.
Communities across the UK will unite to reaffirm their commitment not to take freedom for granted and reflect on measures they can implement to bolster freedoms globally.
Further details about this year’s theme are available on the Holocaust Memorial Day website.
An online nationwide event called Curated Moments is set to take place on Monday, 27 January. This ceremony is organized by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, and individuals can register to view the ceremony online.
