“Nosferatu Reborn: A Haunting Revival of the Horror Masterpiece”

The latest vampire film Nosferatu, penned and helmed by Robert Eggers, reinterprets FW Murnau’s legendary 1922 silent horror picture. The classic, now over a hundred years old, is widely acknowledged as one of the most pivotal horror movies in the annals of cinema, drawing inspiration from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, eerie imagery, and a trailblazing depiction of the vampire lore.

Nosferatuis being shown in select Ster-Kinekor theaters and The Bioscope starting today (17 January 2025).

The fresh version features Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, inheriting Max Schreck’s legacy as the enigmatic and intimidating vampire, with Lily-Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult portraying the Hutter couple. The ensemble cast comprises Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, and Simon McBurney.

Taking place in 19th-century Europe, the narrative centers on Thomas Hutter, a real estate salesman, and his spouse, Ellen, who become entangled in the sinister machinations of Count Orlok. After being dispatched to Transylvania to finalize a property transaction, Thomas uncovers Orlok’s malevolent character. Concurrently, Ellen’s psychic link to the vampire suggests a deeper enigma, with the lives of the couple and their town of Wisburg increasingly endangered.

Eggers elaborates on the gothic aspects of the initial film, crafting a story of obsession, sacrifice, and otherworldly terror. Filmed at Barrandov Studios in Prague, the feature retains the shadowy, ominous ambiance of the 1922 original while incorporating contemporary cinematic approaches to amplify the suspense and emotional intensity.
