EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern swimming and diving team resumes competition on Saturday afternoon following a journey up I-90 to challenge the Wisconsin Badgers. The matchup is scheduled for Noon CT at Soderholm Family Aquatic Center in Madison, Wisconsin. The event will be broadcast live on B1G+ and live results can be accessed through the MeetMobile app. Follow the team on Instagram and X at @nuswimdive.
“We expect to witness some swift swimming this Saturday during our meet against Wisconsin,” stated director of swimming and diving Rachel Stratton-Mills. “They are a very competitive squad, and our team always gets energized for challenges against them, especially being just a few weeks away from the conference championship. We aim to capitalize on the momentum gained from last week’s events and are eager to see what our swimmers will achieve this weekend.”
Last year, when the Badgers came to Evanston, Wisconsin’s men’s team emerged victoriously with a score of 160-139, while the women’s team triumphed over NU, 193-106. The Wisconsin team is spearheaded by two-time Olympian Phoebe Bacon (Paris 2024, 4th place in 200m Backstroke and Tokyo 2020, 5th place in 200m Backstroke). Her recent honors include the 2024 200 Back NCAA Champion, 2024 Big Ten Swimmer of the Championship, 2024 First Team All-Big Ten, and 2023 Big Ten Swimmer of the Year.
The Badgers, celebrating Senior Day, come off a series of commanding victories. The No. 12 women recently competed against UC San Diego and UCLA on January 4, claiming victory in every event except one. Bacon won all four of her races. The men’s team, currently ranked 18th in the nation, faced UC San Diego in a dual meet, where they also won every event. Badger Yoav Romano received Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors after securing first-place finishes in the 200 and 500 freestyle alongside the 400 free relay.
The ‘Cats have made a remarkable start to their season, with the men’s team holding a 5-0 record and the women’s team at 4-1. During the team’s last home competition of the season this past Saturday, both the men’s and women’s teams defeated Penn State and UChicago. The night prior, the ‘Cats were flawless against Southern Indiana, winning all 26 events (recap).
In the contests against Penn State and UChicago, two pool records at Norris Aquatics Center were shattered: Cade Duncan set a record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 42.75 and Tyler Lu in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:45.23. Additionally, Duncan’s relay splits on Saturday – 18.83 in the 200 medley and 21.22/43.31 in the 400 free – were particularly noteworthy.
Three more ‘Cats are heading to Wisconsin on winning streaks: Sophie Martin (100 breaststroke and 200 IM), Zoe Nordmann (500 and 1000 freestyle), and Stuart Seymour (100 backstroke and 50 freestyle) all secured multiple victories on Saturday.
On the diving front against Penn State and UChicago, the ‘Cats claimed three of the four events, prominently featuring Adam Cohen and Caroline Li. Cohen clinched victories in both the 3 meter and 1 meter events, while Li triumphed in the 1 meter.
NEXT UP: The ‘Cats are set to compete in their last event before the Big Tens, a triple dual with Minnesota and Purdue in Minneapolis, from January 31 to February 1. The Big Ten Championships are scheduled for February 19-22 in Columbus, OH. The entire 2024-25 itinerary can be located here and here.
