BELLEFONTE — With icy temperatures predicted, there’s no better opportunity to explore one of Bellefonte’s most delightful seasonal offerings — the Rink at Talleyrand.
Now open for the season, the Rink at Talleyrand provides a scenic space for skaters of all ages and skill levels to traverse the ice, at no cost.
“This has definitely been the most exceptional winter season we’ve operated. With the recent cold wave, the rink has preserved its ice quality and we’ve noticed many individuals enjoying the rink nearly every day,” explained Mark Dello Stritto, proprietor of local advertising firm Blink Advertising.
Initially conceived in 2015 by Dello Stritto, who is the mind behind the public ice skating facility, the project gained momentum in 2021 when he discussed the idea with former owner of Bonfatto’s Italian Market & Corner Cafe, Dave Letterman. After conducting research to discover an affordable and viable option, the duo collaborated with other business owners to find sponsorship for the rink’s acquisition to be donated to the borough.
“With the support of the borough, nonprofit entities, and local enterprises, this addition serves as another attraction to draw visitors to Bellefonte — particularly as a winter destination to enhance foot traffic and business during the colder months,” stated Dello Stritto.
He remarked that comments and shares on social media have provided a wealth of positive responses and demonstrated considerable enthusiasm.
To keep the rink available for community enjoyment for as long as possible, organizers urge skaters to pay attention to conditions and posted signs. To ensure a fruitful season and to offer everyone a chance to relish the ice, Bellefonte.com has disseminated a list of rules and reminders for skaters:
— Skate at your own discretion. The ice surface is not entirely smooth like an indoor rink since there is no Zamboni.
— Bring your own skates. Rentals are not available at this moment, and footwear is not allowed on the ice except when accompanying a child.
— Children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
— Steer clear of the rink’s edges to prevent damaging the liner with skates. If the liner sustains damage, the rink may close prematurely for the season.
— No consumption of food or drinks is allowed on the rink.
— If snow covers the ice, please refrain from skating. Volunteers, who are always welcome, will strive to clear the snow as swiftly as possible.
— The walkway from the park promenade is equipped with rubber mats. Consider bringing a folding chair or camp chair to sit on while fastening your skates.
— When you notice the “Temporarily Closed” sign displayed, please do not venture onto the ice. This helps prevent harm to the rink.
— Exercise your best judgment upon arrival. Even if the closed sign is absent, inspect the ice for snow, slush, or puddles.
— Share your photos using the hashtag #LoveBFT!
“The intent for the rink is to benefit the community, and we must all collaborate to ensure it can remain open for us as frequently and for as long as possible,” the sponsors expressed online.
The organizers extend their heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors who provided financial support or services to make the Rink at Talleyrand a reality. These sponsors include Blink Advertising, Bonfatto’s Italian Market & Corner Cafe, Bellefonte.com, Big Spring Spirits, Centre Dental Care, The Gamble Mill, Gavek Graphics, Helen Foxx & Co., Schuster Landscaping, and several Bellefonte Bed & Breakfast establishments: Bellefonte B&B, The Craftsman on Linn, Our Fair Lady, The Queen, Reynolds Mansion, and Riffles & Runs.
They also expressed appreciation for the many volunteers and Bellefonte Borough, responsible for setting up, dismantling, and storing the rink each year. They manage everything from installing the boards and liner to filling the rink.
“We cherish having the ice rink as a complimentary winter activity,” added Borough Manager Ralph Stewart.
One never knows when weather conditions may change, so lace up those skates and make the most of the rink while it’s available! Enjoy your skating experience!
