Splashes of Victory: Women’s Swim Team Celebrates Six Victories at Siena

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. (January 18, 2025) – Stonehill College participated in a dual competition against Siena College, securing six event victories, although the Saints emerged with a 238.5-128.5 decision in women’s swimming at the Siena Swim Center this afternoon.

Stonehill’s 200-yard medley relay excelled with a first-place finish, commencing the meet in 1:49.65. Freshman Maddie Gomez initiated with a personal-best backstroke leg of 27.68 seconds, followed by junior Taylor Belanger, who swam the breaststroke leg in 30.70 seconds, and sophomore Grace Idowu concluding the butterfly leg in 26.36 seconds, before junior Kristy Barry wrapped up the freestyle anchor leg in 24.91 seconds.

Freshman Elizabeth Weston excelled in the backstroke events for Stonehill, beginning with a first-place result at 100 yards in a personal-best 59.66 seconds, while Gomez secured third in 1:00.44.

The 50-yard sprint competitions were held as “skins” events, with half the participants being eliminated after a round. Weston later achieved a second-place finish in the 50-yard backstroke “skins” event, clocking a time of 29.86 seconds in the final round. She also secured second in the first round with a personal-best 28.02 seconds and in the semifinals in 28.48 seconds.

Senior Sharlotte Lundell claimed victory in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.26, while postgrad Katie Keating finished third in 1:01.59, and junior Azia Koser came in fourth with a season-best 1:02.16.

Belanger and fellow junior Jami Hepburn dominated the 50-yard breaststroke, taking first and second places, respectively. Belanger secured the head-to-head final against Hepburn in 31.34 seconds, while Hepburn finished in 32.58 seconds. Belanger commenced with a 30.88-second split in the first round, just 0.04 seconds behind in second with a season-best 30.92 seconds. Belanger also claimed victory in the semifinal heat with a time of 31.24 seconds, followed closely by Hepburn in 31.57 seconds.

Barry followed up her school-record performance in the 100-yard individual medley relay at Brandeis on Wednesday, finishing second in the event today with a time of 1:09.90, while Gomez concluded a solid afternoon with a fourth-place finish in 1:03.08.

Barry also placed second in the 400-yard individual medley, clocking in at 4:47.93. She completed the butterfly leg in 1:03.73, swam the backstroke leg in 1:13.14, finished the breaststroke leg in 1:26.23, and concluded with the freestyle anchor leg in 1:07.72.

Freshman Lilith Peterson and Hepburn delivered outstanding performances in the 100-yard breaststroke, separated by merely a tenth of a second. Peterson finished second in 1:09.23, while Hepburn secured third in a season-best 1:09.23.
