A proposed actual property undertaking in Maharashtra’s Neral, almost 100 km from Mumbai, stirred a political controversy after its commercial went viral on-line.

The undertaking was marketed as “Halal Lifestyle Township”, which drew criticism and accusations of promoting exclusivity on religious lines. It was alleged that the project was being marketed as a residential space for a community.

The row erupted after former National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chairperson Priyank Kanoongo shared the video of the advertisement on his X handle and labelled it “Nation Within The Nation”.

After backlash over the Halal property, the builder has taken down the advert from his social media platforms.

A girl within the commercial was seen sporting a hijab and describing the township as a group offering “genuine group residing” with “like-minded families who share the same values”.

She marketed that the place would have prayer areas and group gatherings inside “strolling distance”.

Kanoongo shared the video on X and said that a notice has been issued to the Maharashtra government.

All India Muslim Jamaat National President Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi criticised the use of the word “Halal” within the undertaking and stated that it was an try to “unfold hatred” in society.

“By using such a name and the word Halal, an attempt is being made to send out a particular kind of message. The builders and people involved in this are not working to unite society, but rather to spread hatred and create division,” he instructed IANS.

Shiv Sena spokesperson Krishna Hegde questioned the motive behind the commercial and urged the state authorities to order an investigation into the undertaking.
