Chairman Hill Applauds Enactment of Bipartisan Law to Curb Abusive Mortgage Data Practices

Washington,
September 5, 2025

House Committee on Financial Services Chairman French Hill (AR-02) issued the next assertion after President Trump signed into legislation the bipartisan invoice, H.R. 2808, Home Buyers Privacy Protection Act, authored by Committee members Rep. John Rose (TN-06) and Rep. Ritchie Torres (NY-15):

“I’m pleased to see President Trump signed the bipartisan Homebuyers Privacy Protection Act into law. I also want to thank Reps. Rose and Torres for their tireless work on this issue over the last two Congresses. This important bill protects homebuyers’ personal financial information, while encouraging competition and choice in the mortgage market.”

Further Background:

When a potential homebuyer applies for a mortgage, it may “trigger” the sale of their private data to different lenders – typically with out their specific data or consent. This is named a “trigger lead.”

The Homebuyers Privacy Protection Act modernizes the system by placing clear, commonsense guardrails across the sale of set off leads.
