Celebrate Community + Creativity at ICP’s Community Day x Education Open House

ICP’s Community Day x Education Open House welcomes guests to our museum and college for an interactive day exploring ICP’s Open Education program, providing hands-on demos, portfolio opinions, alternatives to attach with college, and data tables to be taught extra about programs and workshops at ICP.

About In Light and Shadow

The historical past of pictures–and the Americas–is incomplete with out the important work and views of Indigenous American photographers. Since the 1800s, cameras have been within the fingers of Indigenous individuals, and so they have integrated pictures into their lives as creators, patrons, and collectors.

Five years in the past, photographers Brian Adams and Sarah Stacke set off on a mission to assemble a groundbreaking, digital library of Indigenous photographers from the nineteenth century to the current. With In Light and Shadow: A Photographic History from Indigenous America, Adams and Stacke increase on that work, making a one-of-a-kind assortment of pictures that gives a first-hand take a look at the individuals, cultures, and evolving traditions of Indigenous America whereas offering a counterhistory to settler-colonial narratives.

From Jennie Fields Ross Cobb, the earliest recognized Indigenous American girl photographer, to Arhuaco documentarian Amado Villafaña Chaparro, by Kapuleiikealoonalani Flores, a Native Hawaiian who was born in 2000, the photographers span many generations in addition to a number of Indigenous societies and nations. Each entry features a biographical sketch of the artist, together with their inspirations and contributions to the photographic medium.
