Swim & Dive Goes 2-1 in SMU Quad Meet

DALLAS – The UNT swimming and diving program had a powerful efficiency in its first joint competitors of the season on Friday, leaving SMU’s Robson and Lindley Aquatic Center with a 2-1 mark on the day after wins over Oklahoma Christian and UIW and a loss to host SMU.

The most dominant effort for the Mean Green got here on the boards, as junior Sydney Guidara picked up the place she left off after her sturdy sophomore season and cruised to a victory within the 1-meter springboard, successful by greater than 40 factors with a rating of 274.35. She got here in second by only a half-point within the 3-meter springboard with a 299.65.

UNT had a number of second-place showings on the day, led by freshman Maria Jose Sanchez Castro’s runner-up finishes within the 200 breaststroke (2:19.52) and 200 IM (2:08.45). She additionally completed third within the 100 breaststroke (1:04.13). 

“We had a great meet collectively as a team,” head coach Brittany Roth mentioned. “It was great to see the swimmers sharpen their races from last week and build on the work they’ve been putting in training. Our divers were really strong, and they kicked their season in a great way. This was a great night of performance, especially for this point in the season.”

The 200 medley relay crew of freshman Vivian Anderson and sophomores Mikaela Goelst, Maria Mitova and Scarlett McCloud took second in 1:43.53, whereas Goelst and Anderson every claimed particular person runner-up finishes within the 100 breaststroke (1:03.75) and 200 backstroke (2:04.96), respectively. 

Senior Kayleigh Lovell took second within the 1,000 freestyle in 10:16.12, and sophomore Jette Schindler took second within the 200 butterfly in 2:04.21.

Anderson, Mitova and McCloud teamed up with sophomore Maddie McAlister on the 400 freestyle relay crew that took third in 3:28.11, whereas Mitova took third within the 500 freestyle in 5:05.69 and fourth within the 200 butterfly in 2:07.09. Anderson tied for fourth within the 50 freestyle in 24.04, whereas McCloud completed fourth within the 200 freestyle in 1:52.94 and fifth within the 100 freestyle. Freshman Ava Zadigian completed fourth within the 100 backstroke in 58.25.

McAlister took fifth within the 100 backstroke, and Schindler claimed fifth within the 100 butterfly.

On the boards, sophomore Amelia Sharp completed fourth within the 1-meter springboard, and sophomore Valeria Hernandez Meza completed fifth on each boards.

“I was really impressed with Kayleigh Lovell’s effort in the 1,000 and then tapping into her sprinting for the team,” Roth mentioned. “Scarlett McCloud was a big factor in her events, I think she surprised herself with her performance this early in the season. Maddie McAlister had an awesome meet. She came through in a big way in her individual and relay efforts. It was great seeing Mikaela Goelst having fun and hitting speed this early, especially in her 100 breaststroke. Majo Sanchez Castro had a big 200 breaststroke – getting under 2:20 at this phase is a great place to build from. Viv Anderson got to show her range, and had a great 200 backstroke as well as all of her sprint efforts. This was a great meet for our team collectively, and i’m excited to get to build from this meet as we take on our next training cycle.”

UNT will return to motion on Oct. 25, when the Mean Green will host Tulane, with diving set to start at 10 a.m., and swimming at 11 a.m.
