North East fringe occasions to ‘encourage subsequent technology’

Every week of fringe occasions for the primary Mercury Prize ceremony exterior of London will encourage the following technology, organisers say.

The competition of free occasions round north-east England will kick off on Friday, forward of the distinguished music trade awards at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena on 16 October.

Showcases, workshops and masterclasses shall be held on Tyneside, together with venues in Sunderland, Durham and Hexham.

One of the organisers, Adam MacDonald, from music growth company Generator, mentioned they hoped to create a “lasting legacy” by working with “grassroots emerging artists who are going to be there within the next 10 years, winning that Mercury Prize”.

Previously shortlisted artist Paul Smith, from Maxïmo Park, will lead a songwriting masterclass in Sunderland.

Meanwhile, a South Shields workshop for neurodivergent children will culminate in a musical efficiency.

Other occasions will see reveals from “tomorrow’s stars”, together with Middlesbrough’s Finn Forster.

Mr MacDonald mentioned his spotlight of the “ambitious” agenda was the Generator Live Conference, a full day of panels giving a behind-the-scenes perception from the artists and trade leaders.

He mentioned guests would be capable to see what made the North East music scene so particular.

“We’re really friendly. We’re really good hosts as well,” Mr MacDonald mentioned.

“Even from the grassroots to the most established artists, we’ve got some world class talent.

“It’s all about amplifying that and placing us on the world stage.”
