Worlds of Fun responds to security incident

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Worlds of Fun has responded for the primary time to experiences of a security harness failure on the Mamba curler coaster earlier this month.

Chris and Cassie Evins mentioned they had been using the Mamba after they heard screams from the seat behind them. The couple mentioned a lady’s seatbelt got here undone through the trip’s first hill.

“We get on the roller coaster and the very first hill, the girl sitting behind my wife just lets out this blood-curdling scream like I’ve never heard before,” Chris Evins mentioned. “I assumed it was her first time on the ride and then she said my seatbelt came undone.”

Couple intervened throughout trip

The Evins mentioned they instantly reached over to assist preserve her contained in the trip.

“I had looped my arm underneath her lap bar, which had a pretty big gap between her and the lap bar. So at this point, I’m seeing a huge space, no seatbelt. I looped my arm underneath the lap bar, and I grabbed a hold of her wrist. My wife was pushing down on her legs,” Chris Evins mentioned.

As season ticket holders accustomed to the Mamba, the couple mentioned they knew the trip’s format and anticipated the upcoming hills and turns.

“As we crested each hill or as we started to go up to the top, I recognized that it was going to lift her out of her seat. So I kind of shifted our positions to, instead of hold her, to push down on her whole body to keep her from coming out of the seat while we’re going over those hills,” Chris Evins mentioned.

The couple mentioned they managed to maintain the rider safe till the trip stopped.

Park response and security measures

After reporting the incident, the Evins mentioned administration assured them the trip was closed for inspection for the rest of the night.

On Thursday, a Worlds of Fun spokesperson confirmed to KCTV5 that they shut the trip down instantly after the incident. A staff inspected it completely earlier than reopening later that night.

The park mentioned the Mamba has a multi-layered restraint system and has operated safely because the incident.

“My whole thought after the incident is, what if it had been somebody else in our seats? What if it was other, her friends? You know, they could have had a drastically different outcome,” Chris Evins mentioned.

The couple mentioned they grew to become separated through the incident and didn’t get an opportunity to talk with the woman. They mentioned they’re attempting to attach together with her household.
