Ocean rescues in WA’s South West spark requires change to swimming classes mannequin

Life-saving abilities 

Royal Life Saving Australia’s 2025 Drowning Report found ocean beaches were the most common location for drownings in Western Australia.

It highlighted issues about swimmers probably missing the mandatory abilities to get out of issue in open water.

South West swim instructor Charlotte O’Beirne said she would like to see more focus on survival skills rather than technique.

Ms O’Beirne said while VacSwim taught basic skills, it was not necessarily a reflection of a child’s ability to survive in the water.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jonathan How said Friday’s conditions were par for the course in the South West over summer.
