Notes: No. 22 Hawkeyes Journey to Rutgers – Iowa Hawkeyes Athletics

The 22nd-ranked University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team heads to New Jersey for a Big Ten dual meet against Rutgers on Saturday. Action inside of Jersey Mike’s Arena will begin at 1 p.m. (CT).

LAST TIME OUT

• The Hawkeyes set a new program record over No. 30 Nebraska, 197.225-196.825.
• Iowa took event wins in vault (49.175), bars (49.425) and floor (49.375).
• Senior Gianna Masella tied a career-high of 9.900 to claim the vault title.
• Sophomore Aurélie Tran and freshman Sophie Schriever shared an individual title on bars posting 9.925.
• Senior Emily Erb shared the floor title with a season-high 9.925.
• The Hawkeyes claimed all podium positions in the all-around with Tran securing first place, scoring a season-high 39.500.

SCOUTING RUTGERS

• Rutgers enters the meet with a 5-3 overall record and 1-3 mark in Big Ten competition.
• Ranked No. 40 in the nation, the Scarlet Knights have a season average of 194.804.
• Rutgers recently posted a season-high score of 196.175 against No. 24 Maryland.
• The Scarlet Knights hold conference losses against No. 16 Ohio State, No. 13 Penn State and Washington.
• Senior Gabrielle Dildy and graduate Emily Leese were tabbed Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch.

IN THE RANKINGS

• Iowa enters week six as the 22nd-ranked team in the nation, ranking No. 15 on vault, No. 15 on bars and No. 24 on floor.
• Aurélie Tran ranks fifth nationally and second in the Big Ten on bars, with an average of 9.900.
• Sophie Schriever ranks 16th nationally and fourth in the Big Ten in the all around, following her career-high 39.475.

REWRITING THE BOOKS

• Iowa set a program record with a 197.225 against Nebraska and tied the program’s best bars score with a 49.426. 
• The GymHawks posted a 196.775 at Minnesota to tie for the 16th-best score in school history.
• Aurélie Tran (2x) and Sophie Schriever tied for eighth all-time on uneven bars with 9.925.
• Against Nebraska (Feb. 7) the Hawkeyes set a new attendance record, 4,100.

O’ CANADA!

• The Hawkeyes have three Canadians on the roster for 2026, including three 2024 Olympians in sophomore Cassie Lee, Aurélie Tran and Sydney Turner.
• Tran leads the team with 9 event titles (3x bars, 3x all-around, 2x vault, 1x beam).
• Following competing in the all-around every meet, Tran earned Iowa’s female Student-Athlete of the Month for January. 
• Turner has 3 event titles (2x beam and 1x floor) and was tabbed a Big Ten Gymnast to Watch.
• After competing in every meet last season, Tran earned first-team All-Big Ten and All-Freshman honors.

SENSATIONAL SOPHIE

• Sophie Schriever is the only freshman to compete in the all-around for the Hawkeyes, posting a season-high 39.475.
• The newcomer has captured four titles (2x all-around, 1x on bars and 1x beam).
• In every meet this season, Schriever has set new career-highs on at least 3 events. 

Q’ S COMEBACK

• Fifth-year JerQuavia Henderson successfully returned to the lineup after two years.
• In week four, Henderson shared a vault title, scoring 9.900.
• Henderson posted a career best, 9.850 on bars against Nebraska.
• Against Michigan State, Henderson won titles on beam (9.825) and in the all-around (39.375).
• Henderson was named a Big Ten Gymnast to Watch.

THE LLEWELLYN ERA

• Jen Llewellyn is heading into her second season as head coach for the GymHawks after bringing success immediately to the program.
• After being picked to finish 10th in the Preseason Poll, the GymHawks took fifth in the regular season and at Big Ten Championships.
• Following their first season assistant coaches Craig Ballard, Brenna Brooks and Kyle Grable were named Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association WCGA Assistant Coaches of the Year for the North Central Region.
• Ballard spent the last 13 seasons on staff at Kent State University. Brooks was a student-athlete under Llewellyn at Washington and was an assistant coach in 2024. Grable was on staff at UCLA the past three seasons and was a successful club coach for 15 years prior to that. 

NEW FACES ON THE MAT

• The Hawkeyes have welcomed four newcomers to the team, all freshmen.
• The freshman class includes Oklahoma native Maggie Ball, Nevada native Daisy Bowles, Arizona native Stella DePaola and Utah native Sophie Schriever.
• Ball is the daughter of Oklahoma head coach K.J. Kindler and associate head coach Lou Ball.
