About the Exhibition

The International Center of Photography presents HARD COPY NEW YORK, an expanded iteration of Aaron Stern’s ongoing challenge exploring the modern use of the photocopied picture. Following earlier iterations, together with a 2025 present in Los Angeles, the group exhibition makes use of the visible language of the copy machine to evoke nostalgia for a time of extra deliberate image making.

In our present second when digital pictures proliferate, fewer bodily copies of pictures are made or exhibited. Through this present, curators David Campany and Aaron Stern goal to reassert images’s inherent energy: its means to supply a profound, democratic, and tangible expertise.

About the Speakers

David Campany is Creative Director of the International Center of Photography, New York. He has labored worldwide with establishments together with MoMA New York, Tate, Whitechapel Gallery London, Centre Pompidou, Le Bal Paris, ICP New York, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, The Photographer’s Gallery London, ParisPhoto, PhotoLondon, The National Portrait Gallery London, Aperture, Steidl, MIT Press, Thames & Hudson, MACK and Frieze.

 

Ari Marcopoulos who was born in Amsterdam in 1957 and moved to New York City in 1980, is an artist at the moment dwelling and dealing in New York. He has been the topic of a number of solo exhibitions, at Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Berkeley Art Museum in California; MoMA PS1, New York; Fergus McCaffrey Gallery, galerie frank elbaz, Paris; Marlborough Chelsea, New York; and Alleged Gallery, New York.  Marcopoulos participated in two Whitney Biennials (in 2008 and 2010), and his pictures are in collections together with the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; New Orleans Museum of Art; and Detroit Institute of Arts. Museum of Modern Art from the City of Paris. This May his exhibition Butter Black Snow opens at Strat Editions, Livingstone, Montana. 

Daniel Arnold (b. 1980, USA) is a photographer whose candid, street-level pictures seize the unfiltered rhythms of city life. Arnold is predicated in New York and his first monograph, Pickpocket, was revealed by Elara Press in 2022. His images repeatedly seems in publications resembling The New York Times, Vogue, and Interview journal. His current solo exhibitions embody New York Life, New York Life Gallery and New Photographs, Mark Wolfe Contemporary Art, San Francisco.

Aaron Stern is a Manhattan-based curator, artist and creator working between the Americas and Europe. His pictures, books, writing and curatorial initiatives have appeared in publications and establishments resembling RoseGallery, Webber Gallery, WSA, Magenta Plains, Dashwood Books, Perrotin, Photo Saint Germain, International Center for Photography, Paris Photo, Los Angeles Art Book Fair, Index Art Fair, Purple Magazine, The Paris Review, Vogue, The New York Times, Dazed&Confused, and Interview Magazine.
