The SMC Pete & Susan Barrett Art Gallery will current two free “In Conversation” artist roundtables tied to its present exhibition, “Concrete Hope | Esperanza Concreta,” a part of FotoSoCal by CuratorLove — a consortium of greater than 20 neighborhood faculty galleries throughout Southern California. Curator Erika Hirugami, who additionally teaches History of Photography at SMC, will lead each discussions.

The first roundtable takes place Monday, April 7, at 11:15 a.m. in Art 214 on the SMC Main Campus, 1900 Pico Blvd. Photographers Antonio Perez and Damon Casarez will focus on their work. Perez explores id, historical past, and tradition by means of a number of media, drawing on his Chicano and Mexican heritage. Casarez makes use of images to revisit childhood and adolescence, inspecting how private id is formed.

The second roundtable is Thursday, April 24, at 5 p.m. on the SMC Pete & Susan Barrett Art Gallery, 1310 eleventh St., Santa Monica. California artists Jackie Castillo and Jamil G. Baldwin will focus on the non-public, social, and cultural influences behind their lens-based practices. Castillo works in movie images, sculpture, and set up, whereas Baldwin focuses on analog images and questions of illustration and liberation.
