David P. Gilkey, NPR photojournalist: In remembrance : NPR

Ten years in the past right now, NPR journalists David Gilkey and Zabihullah Tamanna had been killed whereas on project with an NPR workforce in Afghanistan. They had been touring with the Afghan National Army when their convoy was ambushed — not random victims, however focused by attackers who had been tipped off to the presence of Americans in Afghanistan’s Helmand province. They are the one NPR journalists who’ve ever been killed within the line of responsibility.

David joined NPR in 2007. He coated the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and an Ebola epidemic in Liberia. He frolicked with refugees of Syria’s civil conflict in Toledo, Ohio, and captured the tales of schoolchildren in Kabul. He felt particularly near U.S. servicemen and ladies who he coated on battlefields abroad and adopted their tales once they returned residence. He took each alternative to spotlight the sacrifices they made within the face of grave hazard.

David was 50, and Zabihullah, who had labored for years as a photographer earlier than serving as NPR’s interpreter in Afghanistan, was 38.
