Astronauts get able to restore ISS robotic arm

CAPE CANAVERAL SPACE FORCE STATION — Two astronauts aboard the International Space Station are making ready for a mission to do a spacewalk to restore a damaged robotic arm subsequent week.

NASA flight engineers Chris Williams and Jessica Meir have been making ready for a restore job of the Canadarm2 robotic arm, scheduled for 8:35 a.m. ET, Tuesday, June 30.

“The duo will spend about six hours and 40 minutes on the outside of the orbital lab replacing the malfunctioned wrist joint on Canadarm2 that has been in operation for over 25 years. NASA and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) analyzed the issue and determined a spacewalk was necessary to replace the wrist joint with a spare already on the station,” NASA stated in a blog post on Tuesday.

Both Meir and Williams have been going over 3D interactive animations of procedures and maneuvers that may assist them get the arm in full movement.

The practically 56-foot (17-meter) arm is a part of the Canadian Space Agency’s contribution to the floating laboratory. It strikes provides, tools, and astronauts across the outdoors of the house station and it’s used to “catch” visiting autos and assist them to dock with the ISS.

While the duo is conducting the spacewalk to restore the arm, NASA flight engineer Jack Hathaway and European Space Agency’s flight engineer Sophie Adenot shall be contained in the International Space Station to observe Williams and Meir.
