Scarborough, Maine shark sightings immediate police to situation warning – NBC Boston

Police in a southern Maine city issued a warning Tuesday after a number of shark had been noticed in waters off a neighborhood seashore.

Scarborough police initially stated there was a confirmed sighting of two sharks in native waters off Pine Point Beach. The sightings had been within the space of the southern tip of Prouts Neck and close to the mouth of the Scarborough River.

The sharks gave the impression to be two juvenile nice white sharks, between 6-8 toes in size, police stated. The details about the sightings was relayed to police by a shark professional with the New England Aquarium, who reviewed footage submitted by a neighborhood fisherman. Based on the video, the professional stated the animals “appeared consistent with juvenile great white sharks.”

Scarborough police at the moment are encouraging beachgoers, swimmers, surfers, paddlers and boaters to stay vigilant in native waters.

“While shark encounters remain rare in Maine, the public is encouraged to use caution, avoid swimming near schools of bait fish or seals, and report any additional sightings to local authorities,” they stated.

Later Wednesday, the city posted extra video of sharks, saying that 5 to seven had been seen off Pine Point Beach.

“The sharks were observed swimming and feeding in nearshore waters. At this time, there have been no reported injuries or aggressive interactions with people. The increased activity is believed to be associated with seasonal prey availability, including schools of baitfish and seals,” the city stated.
