Local author pens journey e-book about North Dakota – InForum

FARGO — Alicia Underlee Nelson doesn’t often have bother engaging out-of-towners to go to North Dakota.

It’s the locals who want extra convincing.

Nelson is the creator of “100 Things to Do in Fargo Before You Die” and “North Dakota Beer: A Heady History.”

Her newest e-book, “100 Things To Do in North Dakota Before You Die,” hit cabinets Aug. 1. In it, she paints all the state of North Dakota with awe and curiosity, serving to each curious outsiders and skeptical locals uncover the must-sees, the hidden gems and the long-forgotten treasures.

“North Dakota is a really interesting place,” Nelson stated on a latest Wednesday morning at Bruno’s espresso store in north Fargo. “Writing about it has shown me we are dark, in a good way, and creative and definitely not boring.”

Before she hits the street for e-book excursions throughout the state now by December, she desires to do one thing else, too: Convince folks to start out planning their holidays.

full-time journey author, Nelson

covers tourism locations all over the world. She’s written for “Lonely Planet,” “Conde Nast Traveler,” “Food Network” and “Fodors.”

“In North Dakota, some of our biggest marquee attractions are still relatively undiscovered by the rest of the state,” Nelson stated. “You can go to some of the most famous places in the area and you’re still the only person there.”

Take the North Country Scenic Trail, for instance. Nelson stated the 450-mile path traces the state from Lake Sakakawea within the west to Ft. Ransom State Park to the southeast. From her viewpoint, it’s to not be missed, causes for which she explains in her e-book.

“Travel writing, even when I’m going somewhere that’s close to home, makes me slow down and really see a place because I’m trying to describe it to someone who hasn’t seen it,” Nelson stated. “I want to take people outside of their everyday lives and appreciate the basic landscape of the familiar.”

To discover locations to focus on, Nelson researched closely and by no means shies away from asking locals for inside suggestions. Doing this in North Dakota took her to stunning locales, like digging for fossils in Pembina Gorge, getting a view of Canada from the International Peace Garden and crusing the Missouri River “just like Lewis and Clark,” she added. “It really deepens your appreciation for the history of the area.”

Through her writing Nelson teaches readers not solely about all-things North Dakota, but in addition tips on how to method journey because the means to residing within the second.

“We all keep waiting for our vacations to explore things,” she stated, including that journeys on a tankful are a good way to slot in journey or leisure in a brief time frame and on restricted budgets.
