Chico State College of Agriculture college students flocked into the California State Fair in Sacramento this summer season, and emerged with a number of prime awards.

University Photographers Capture National Awards

A trio of Chico State photographers earned awards this summer season on the 2026 University Photographers’ Association of America (UPAA) Symposium in Ann Arbor, Michigan, together with Student Photographer of the Year honors.

Matt Bates took third place within the June Monthly Image Competition for “Fire Dance.”

Jason Halley earned fourth place within the June Monthly Image Competition for “Wazzup,” and took eleventh place within the Monthly Image Competition Overall.

Bates and Halley earned honorable mentions for his or her work within the Fall 2025 version of Chico Statements, the biannual alumni journal.

And Associated Students photographer and pc science main Dash Ferrero took dwelling the 2026 UPAA Student Photographer of the Year award. In January, he earned third place in UPAA’s Student and Associate class for his “Golden Reflections” picture of a surfer driving a motorized foil board passing below the Golden Gate Bridge.
