We spoke with two consultants about the easiest way to get your porcelain throne glowing clear — together with eradicating cussed stains.

What’s in our bathroom?

Germs in bogs could be micro organism, viruses, fungi or yeast, and different microbes, says Cindy Gunawan, an affiliate professor and microbiologist on the University of Technology Sydney.

She recommends sporting gloves when cleansing your bathroom and washing palms totally afterwards.

Removing cussed stains

Most stains current in bathroom bowls are resulting from scale build-up from the water provide, explains Mr Shipway.

“Clients will often say they have tried everything and haven’t been able to get rid of it.

“General bleaches and bathroom cleaners will not sort out that.”

Instead, Mr Shipway recommends a sulphamic acid-based product such as Scalex, which removes mineral scale, calcium deposits, lime, rust and scum.

“You may attempt a [toilet] pumice stone to scrape off that build-up,” Mr Shipway says.

“You can choose up a packet of three to 6 of them for $10 and they’re going to final you eternally.”

Friction is a key a part of eradicating stains, says Mr Steen.

What about the remainder of your bathroom?

Dr Gunawan says the flush button, door handles, tap knobs, and under the toilet rims can have higher germ loads than the toilet seat itself. So it’s important not to skip items.

“Also ensure to wash either side of the bathroom lid, in addition to the bottom of the bathroom that meet the ground, partitions and ground within the splash zone.”

For toilet surfaces, Mr Shipway uses a disinfectant spray.

“When you spray, it has to dwell for a while to kill the micro organism.

“Then you can go in with paper towel or microfibre cloth and wipe it down.”

For stains on the seat, attributable to faux tan for instance, Mr Shipway swears by magic erasers.

He recommends a deep clear in your bathroom each three months.

Toilet brush upkeep

Traditional bristle bathroom brushes manufactured from nylon and plastic ought to ideally get replaced each three to 6 months, Mr Shipway says.

He says silicone brushes could last as long as two years in use.
