Approximately a dozen people were in attendance at the Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site’s program “Fun With Flags” which was held on Friday, July 22nd.

The presentation started with Christopher Warren introducing himself and explaining a little of his background (Master of Arts degree in Civil War Military History, Adjunct History Professor at Mineral Area College, and Civil War reenactor for the past 27 years).

During the program, Christopher explained that more Medals of Honor were awarded for the capture of Civil War flags than any other feat.

He shared many interesting and little-known facts about Civil War flags, including terminology, myths, and misconceptions. In addition, he gave details on various southern and unique unit flags that had a connection to the Battle of Pilot Knob and the local area. Such as; Generals Polk, Hardee, and Marmaduke had different flags that were unique to their troops.

Christopher’s presentation also included photos of more than 50 original Civil War flags that are still in existence. He also explained the significance of these flags and the differences between the various Union and Confederate flags used in Missouri during the U.S. Civil War.

Some of the program’s highlights included photos of his great-great-great grandfather’s unit flags. William S. Reed from Arcadia, MO had served in the 25th Missouri Infantry and later the 1st Missouri Engineers.

Towards the end of the program, Christopher opened it up for questions, to which the audience had several. The presentation was very informative, and those in attendance really seemed to enjoy it.
