Charleston-area high school swimmers had impressive performances on Friday and Saturday at the 2022 S.C. High School League state championships, held at the USC Natatorium in Columbia. 

Wando’s boys team captured the Class AAAAA championship, and the Bishop England girls won the Class AAA state title to lead a strong showing by Lowcountry swimmers. 

Lucy Beckham’s girls team was the state runner-up in Class AAAA, while the boys team finished third.

Oceanside Collegiate finished as the state runner-up in AAA girls, snapping a three-year reign as state champion. The Oceanside Collegiate boys team finished fourth in AAA, and the Academic Magnet boys team placed third.

Gold medal performances in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard relay led the way for Wando’s state championship. Wando’s Charlie Green won gold in the 500-yard freestyle and silver in the 100-yard backstroke. Luke Green was second in the individual medley, and Chase Healy was second in the 50-yard freestyle and second in the 100.

Bishop England edged out Lowcountry rival Oceanside Collegiate in the AAA girls, posting a team score of 418 while OCA scored 347 points. Academic Magnet was fifth with 217 points.

Bishop England won the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard relay. Ellie Chalupsky finished second in the 50-yard free and the 100-yard backstroke. Her teammate, Lindsay Burbage, was state runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley.

Other standout performances:

• Bishop England’s Justin Hafner was one of the top individual performers in the Class AAA meet. Hafner captured gold in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle finals. His teammate, Owen Fritts, was a double winner with gold in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke.

• Bishop England’s Matthew Picard won the 100-yard freestyle and finished second in the 200. Kyle Hertwig of Academic Magnet won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly while Jack Troy of Academic Magnet was the state champion in the 100-yard backstroke.

• Oceanside Collegiate’s Nell Cagle won two gold in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke. OCA’s Charlotte Hill was second in the 100-yard butterfly and Caroline Hill was second in the 100-yard freestyle. Academic Magnet’s Julia Reed was state runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle.

• West Ashley’s Carson Owens finished second in the 100-yard butterfly.

• In the AAAA meet, Lucy Beckham’s Adair Shaw was the state champion in the 100-yard butterfly. She also was second in the 200-yard individual medley. Kennedy Deveaux of Lucy Beckham was second in the 200 and second in the breaststroke while Avery Frece was second in the 50-yard free. Katie Grace of Vandergrift was second in the butterfly.

• James Island’s Emma Durham took second in both the backstroke and the 100-yard free.

• In the AAA boys meet, James Island’s Wells Cloud won gold in the 200-yard free and the 100-yard butterfly. James Island finished 11th in the team standings while the girls team was eighth. Ashley Ridge finished sixth in the boys AAAAA meet, while West Ashley and Summerville placed seventh and eighth, respectively.
