RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Individuals throughout KOTA Territory are getting ready to honor the conclusion of 2024 and usher in the New Year.

Regardless of how you decide to observe the New Year, if consuming alcohol is part of your plans, be cautious.

“I would say most of the calls pertain to alcohol and drugs, such as individuals driving while impaired, or perhaps you’re hosting a gathering at home where guests are drinking, and situations can escalate, leading to family disputes and similar issues,” PCSO Deputy Sheriff Brain Harlan remarked.

Authorities stress the necessity of arranging safe transportation options.

“It’s a wise decision to sit down with the people you will be spending time with tonight and establish a solid plan for who will be the designated driver, collect keys when guests arrive, and prepare for a bustling night ahead,” stated RCPD Patrol Lieutenant Darren Soucy.

“The legal limit stands at .08, yet you can still be apprehended for impaired driving even if you are below that threshold, as individual tolerances vary. Furthermore, for minors, there is a strict zero tolerance concerning alcohol,” Harlan explained.

With an increase in reports of gunshots and fireworks being mistaken for gunfire, law enforcement is intensifying their efforts this year.

Fireworks are banned within city limits, and authorities indicate that offenders will not receive warnings.

“We aim to distinguish between dangerous discharges and fireworks; most individuals can recognize the difference. However, it requires significant manpower to respond to such incidents. Therefore, if we attend a fireworks complaint and discover illegal activity involving fireworks, the mayor has requested that we take action, and we will,” Soucy added.

To report a driver suspected of intoxication or illegal firework usage, you may reach out to the Rapid City Police Department’s non-emergency number at (605)394-4131.

In Rapid City, residents can participate in a “masquerade and mischief” event at the Hotel Alex Johnson downtown starting at 9 p.m., featuring live music and a midnight countdown.

In the Northern Hills area, there will be a live comedy performance at Tin Lizzie Gaming Resort at 9 p.m.

For those eager to put on their swimsuit in December, Watiki Indoor Waterpark Resort is hosting a celebration until 10 p.m.
