Assertion from Minister Olszewski relating to wildfires in Newfoundland and Labrador

August 7, 2025 – Ottawa (Ontario) – Today, the Honourable Eleanor Olszewski, Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience and Minister accountable for Prairies Economic Development Canada, issued the next assertion:

“Wildfires in Newfoundland and Labrador are stretching firefighting assets amidst difficult climate circumstances. The scenario is posing a major threat to vital infrastructure and communities, a few of which have been ordered to evacuate.

In occasions like this, all orders of presidency have to work collectively, and that coordination is already underway.

Last night time, in my capability as Minister of Emergency Management, I authorised a Request for Federal Assistance from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, authorizing as wanted:

• plane to help with response efforts
• personnel to help with planning, coordination, and logistics
• Type 3 firefighters to help firefighting efforts
• transportation of important folks and items
• further humanitarian workforce capability

The Government Operations Centre is working with the Canadian Armed Forces, the Canadian Coast Guard, and different federal and provincial companions, to deploy all vital assets, and make sure the province has the mandatory assist to cope with these wildfires.
