Fun with Film: pictures from my 60+ 12 months outdated Leica M2

Mini Review of the Leica M2 right here.

I shot nearly two rolls off 135 movie. The first was a contemporary roll of Kodak Ultramax 400 movie. Rated at ISO 400, that is Kodak’s normal objective industrial movie inventory. The different roll was a just lately expired roll of Portra 400. Expired movie is often experimental. I took an opportunity at this inventory, which expired in November 2024. I have no idea the circumstances through which the movie has been saved. But Portra is Kodak’s prime skilled unfavourable movie, and often superb.

Leica M2 with Summaron-M 2.8/35mm, and a field of Kodak Gold. I’ve not use this roll of movie but.

Both movie inventory prefers to be over-exposed, however 1 cease is usually thought-about best. The improvement and scanning was finished by Konota Singapore and scaned as Base 16 utilizing their Noritsu HS-1800 scanner.

Kodak Ultramax 400

First up, the Ultramax 400. I discovered the movie to be fairly good. And am usually proud of the outcomes. The rendering from the Summaron-L 2.8/35mm was fairly good. I preferred the topic isolation, and I shot primarily at full open aperture of f/2.8. Colour rendition of the lens and Ultramax was very nice. Grain was current, however it was movie grain, which is natural, and provides to the vibe of the images.

Same room. Same vantage level from my desk at breakfast, however this time with the Summaron-M 35 as an alternative of the broader 21mm used within the earlier shot. Both have been shot hand-held, with my elbows braced on the desk prime.

Kodak Portra 400 (Expired Nov 2024)

This picture was taken in good mild in Lake Geneva of the well-known Jet’eau. The grains are outstanding. The outcomes have been very grainy. With giant, multicolour noise. Not best. But if checked out a ample distance away in order that the grains weren’t seen, the colors have been reasonably good. Perhaps a nasty batch.

And a glance from the lake to the pier.

Here are some portraits on the Portra, often thought-about wonderful for this model of images.

Concluding ideas

Frankly the roll of the Ultramax was reasonably pleasant. I loved capturing the M2 very a lot, and the behavior of metering with my cellphone earlier than composing and focusing was fairly a pleasure to make use of. The pictures have been satisfying. And once I acquired the scans for the Portra again, I used to be fairly dissatisfied with the graininess of the photographs. But wanting by way of them once more, they do have a reasonably natural movie look.

Self Portrait. Geneva, September 2025.

And I reasonably loved capturing with the classic digital camera and with movie. What do you assume? Do you shoot with movie? What is your arrange in the event you do, and what’s your go to movie inventory?
