Washington, D.C., December 31, 2025 – The National Indian Gaming Commission mourns the passing of former NIGC Chairman Harold Monteau, a devoted public servant whose management helped form the early path of Indian gaming regulation and strengthened tribal self-determination.

Mr. Monteau served because the Chairman of the National Indian Gaming Commission throughout a pivotal interval following the enactment of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. In that position, he performed a key half in constructing the Commission’s regulatory framework and guiding the expansion of Indian gaming as a software for financial improvement, authorities providers, and neighborhood well-being for tribal nations. His work helped set up requirements that proceed to help the integrity and success of tribal gaming. Chairman Monteau’s management ensured regulatory oversight was grounded in respect for tribal authority and the distinctive wants of every nation.
