The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) has introduced a brand new pictures prize, with Yael Martínez, a Guerrero, Mexico-based artist, as its inaugural recipient.

Cathy Edelman, a former Chicago gallerist, established the Edelman Impact Award to acknowledge lens-based artists in early or midcareer who give attention to social points by way of visible storytelling. Her gallery debuted in 1987 with Nan Goldin’s Ballad of Sexual Dependency, and he or she confirmed artists working in a variety of photographic methods, together with vogue pictures by Annie Leibovitz, the surrealist imagery of Joel-Peter Witkin, and socially aware work by Richard Misrach, Allen Ginsberg, and others. In 2018, she helped set up the nonprofit CASE Art Fund, using pictures to advocate for the human rights of kids.

In a press launch, Ms. Edelman mentioned, “After 35 years of working with midcareer and emerging photographers, I’m thrilled to support them in a new way” by working with the MFAH.

In addition to receiving a $50,000 unrestricted money prize, the MFAH curatorial group will work with Mr. Martínez to pick a number of of his images for the museum’s everlasting assortment. 

Gary Tinterow, MFAH Director and Margaret Alkek Williams Chair, mentioned that the MFAH pictures assortment of 38,000 objects “has embraced both emerging photographers and art that seeks to improve society by revealing injustice” since turning into a separate curatorial division in 1976. He continued, “The establishment of the Edelman Impact Award celebrates this history and supports artists who have dedicated their art to social issues.”

In his documentary pictures, Mr. Martínez represents expressions of resilience in Mexican communities beset by organized crime violence. His conceptual strategy consists of materials manipulations corresponding to sketching, scratching, and poking holes within the photographic prints. 

Jurors chosen for the inaugural Edelman Impact Award had been Lisa Volpe, MFAH Curator of Photography; Deborah Willis, Professor of Photography and Imaging at New York University; Susan Meiselas, a photographer and President of the Magnum Foundation; and Corey Keller, an unbiased pictures curator.
