This Hidden Glacier Has Sufficient Water to Fill 600 Olympic Swimming Swimming pools

There’s a monster hiding within the mountains of Utah: the Timpanogos Glacier. Unlike most glaciers, visibly sprawled throughout mountaintops or slowly coursing by way of valleys, Timpanogos is a bit shy. It’s a rock glacier, or a glacier that’s hidden beneath layers and layers of unfastened rock that may be tens to a whole lot of toes thick. 

By some estimates, there are roughly 51,000 of those hidden glaciers unfold throughout the planet (836 in Utah alone), they usually’re fairly necessary. To measure the Timpanogos Glacier, a group of geologists led by researchers from Utah University developed a novel approach that relied on detecting gravity. The group carted delicate tools throughout the rocky floor, measuring tiny variations in gravitational acceleration between the ice and rock at over 230 places in a grid sample. The variations in gravity have been so minute, they needed to bear in mind the positions of the solar and the moon.

“There is a large contrast in mass density between the rock that makes up Mount Timpanogos and the much lower density ice that is in the rock glacier adjacent to it,” research creator Michale S. Thorne said. “When we measure the gravitational acceleration over the rock glacier, we see a larger decrease in that gravitational acceleration as we make measurements over areas with thicker ice.”

The end result was a three-dimensional map. According to the group’s measurements, 17 p.c of Timpanogos Glacier is floor rock and the remaining 83 p.c is ice, which is loads. According to their estimates, the glacier comprises about 1.5 million cubic meters of frozen water, sufficient to fill 600 Olympic swimming swimming pools.

But what about the remainder of the planet? 

The researchers have been capable of mannequin relationships between the floor space and the ice beneath, and that allowed them to estimate how a lot water is likely to be hiding in different rock glaciers worldwide. The reply: 48 billion metric tons, or sufficient to fill 400,000 Olympic swimming swimming pools.
