A deeply private tribute: Princess Anne wears cherished brooch to King Harald of Norway’s funeral

Princess Anne attended the funeral of King Harald of Norway right now (Weds 9) carrying a much-loved brooch in his honour.

The Princess Royal, accompanied by the Prince of Wales, joined the funeral procession from the Royal Palace to Oslo Cathedral. And whereas William is representing his father, King Charles, on the funeral, Princess Anne has a particular, private connection to the Norwegian royal household. The Princess Royal is godparent to Norway’s new King, King Haakon, who took the constitutional oath days after his father’s dying on 28 August.

In attendance to help her godson, Anne seemed solemn in a black jacket and scarf, the brooch clearly seen pinned to the material. Known because the Gold Ribbon brooch, the piece dates again to the mid-Twentieth century, and is crafted within the form of a knotted bow encrusted with diamonds.

Tatler reported that the accent is ‘one of the oldest pieces of jewellery in her collection’, and the Princess has cherished it for many years. She was first noticed carrying in in 1969 throughout a gathering with Apollo 8 commander Colonel Frank Borman at Buckingham Palace, and has worn it for a number of milestone moments, together with her seventieth birthday portrait.

Today, in a deeply private tribute, the Princess Royal has chosen to put on the Gold Ribbon brooch to King Harald’s funeral.

Anne, whose particular connection to the royal household was solid when she was requested to be godmother to King Haakon in 1973, is considered one of six royal godparents: the others embrace King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, Princess Astrid of Norway, the late Prince Carl Bernadotte, and his grandfather, the late King Olav V.
