British Museum U-turns on Images of Bayeux Tapestry

The Bayeux Tapestry has taken the British Museum and London by storm with tickets promoting out, merchandise being flaunted throughout social media, and bookshops inserting volumes on the historical past of the Bayeux Tapestry at each until. But it appears guests are already disenchanted by their expertise on the museum because the British Museum has made a U-turn on permitting images, in accordance with the Substack Maxwell Museum.

The British Museum didn’t reply a request for additional remark about using images within the exhibition from ARTnews.

Upon its arrival in Britain, the Bayeux Tapestry has been scrutinized to minute element. Thalia Bajon-Bouzid, one of many tapestry’s conservators, not too long ago advised the New York Times that her crew had found two new small breaks “among its millions of threads while checking its condition after it arrived in England.” She added that the thread breaks have been each “a few millimeters long.”

A spokesperson for the British Museum stated that the “British Museum received the draft of condition report B last week. This report compares the Tapestry’s condition upon its arrival in London in July 2026 with photographs taken in September 2025, before it was taken off display in Bayeux.” That July situation verify was the final full one carried out on the tapestry, with the one earlier to that being in 2020.
