Autism Hero Walk brings 1000’s to Detroit Zoo to assist Michigan’s autism neighborhood

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Capes, smiles and a way of neighborhood crammed the Detroit Zoo Saturday morning as households gathered for the annual Autism Hero Walk — the state’s largest gathering for households touched by autism.

The occasion, hosted by the Autism Alliance of Michigan, doubles as a fundraiser to maintain sources out there for households navigating an autism prognosis.

“This is the largest gathering of Michigan’s autism community,” stated Marc Berke, Chief Development Officer of the Autism Alliance of Michigan. “Sometimes they don’t know where to turn. To have an organization like ours connect them to pediatricians, insurance help, therapy help. It feels so good to know we’re pointing these families in the right direction.”

Kids, teenagers and adults of all ages received to fulfill superheroes — and even gown up as their favorites. When requested about his favourite superhero, David Richardson, who has been identified with autism, didn’t hesitate.

“My granddaughter. She’s 10. This is our 7th year,” Kapler stated. “They have watched her struggle over the last 10 years and grow and fight. A lot of the people here have helped her through that process, so yeah it is very emotional for me.”

Kapler stated the occasion carries a easy however highly effective message about these residing with autism.

“Although they are different. They are still normal,” she stated.

Elizabeth Shepherd, whose nephew has autism, echoed that sentiment, including that the stroll affords one thing for everybody.
