Wing Shya: photographer to Wong Kar-wai on working with the good and good of Hong Kong cinema

I WAS BORN in Hong Kong in 1964. My dad and mom got here from Shandong province, in mainland China, arriving illegally, later legalised – a standard story for that era. I went to the all-boys Salesian School, in Chai Wan, and was not a great pupil. I spent all my time messing round with associates. Then, at 17 or 18, I watched a movie known as Boat People (1982) and there was a personality holding a digicam who seemed cool. Something occurred in me. “I want to be that,” I believed. Not the actor – the photographer. I saved each greenback I produced from part-time jobs till I might purchase a digicam, then I began to {photograph} all the things: associates, household, the road, skate boarders. MY ENGLISH WAS so dangerous and I didn’t do properly in my exams, so college in Hong Kong wasn’t doable.
