It’s rare for a blanket to attain cult status – unless it happens to be Hermès’ legendary Avalon throw. The design, which was launched in 1988 and features the brand’s signature “H” emblem, is prevalent in the residences of the affluent and renowned, including those of the Duchess of Sussex (it made an appearance in her now notorious Netflix documentary) and the Kardashians (each family member has several in their homes). It has evolved into the ideal wedding or baby shower present and has been showcased in more editions of Architectural Digest than can be counted. Elle Decor even referred to it as the Birkin for home furnishings.
Though not every individual can possess an Hermès blanket, it has spurred a new, desirable category in the realm of home décor: the designer blanket/throw.
“We are observing heightened levels of precision and curation regarding the selection of small, cozy furnishings for homes as individuals aim to showcase their personality in every nook,” states Bryony Sheridan, purchasing director at Abask, a digital shopping hub for home interiors and collectible designs.
“Blankets and throws are arguably one of the most immediately striking means to achieve this, as they come in countless colors, patterns, and fabrics, are easily relocated within a space, and serve both functional and aesthetic purposes,” she continues.
Traditionally, blankets serve a practical purpose, notably in the colder seasons, and are typically crafted from denser materials such as wool and cashmere. Conversely, throws tend to be more versatile and often regarded as decorative elements within the home.
In recent times, however, the distinctions have become nebulous as both types have ventured beyond the confines of the bedroom. Today, a chic blanket may be seen draped over the arm of a sofa, placed on the back of an office chair, or even hung on the wall as a striking tapestry.
“We’ve observed them utilized to cultivate a cozy atmosphere for garden gatherings in the summer, or laid over the backs of chairs in winter terraces,” remarks Sheridan.
“In a more conceptual sense, they are increasingly honored as design artifacts in their own right, leading us to see them casually thrown over a bench or chair in a distinctly sculptural salon-style manner, which is quite fabulous,” she adds.
